Heron Power is a startup company building cutting-edge power electronics for the 21st-century grid. We aim to debottleneck the growth of electricity generation and consumption with scalable, innovative, and less costly hardware solutions, accelerating the electrification of everything.

Our first focus goal is to build better converters (inverters & rectifiers) to connect large-scale renewables, storage, and loads to the grid. Heron Power’s leadership team is made up of seasoned veterans who have designed and shipped gigawatts of power conversion products over the past decade.

Job Overview

As an Intern, Regulatory & Growth, you will work directly with Heron’s policy and business development leader to answer high-impact strategic questions, including:

• Which U.S. states offer the most supportive regulatory environments for deploying next-generation grid hardware?

• How are specific state Public Utility Commissions approaching grid modernization and inverter-based resources?

• What policy and incentive programs best support domestic manufacturing of advanced grid infrastructure?

• How are regulatory bodies, federal agencies, and utilities thinking about grid resilience, reliability, and the integration of inverter-based resources — and where can innovative hardware solutions play a role?

• What policy engagement strategies can accelerate adoption of new grid technologies while aligning with state and federal priorities around energy security, electrification, and economic development?

How You Will Contribute

• Research and synthesize state-level energy regulatory and industrial policy landscapes.

• Help develop structured frameworks to evaluate deployment and manufacturing opportunities across priority states.

• Track relevant regulatory proceedings, legislation, and incentive programs that may shape advanced grid hardware deployment. You’ll dive into active public utility commission proceedings, grid modernization dockets, and policy levers.

• Produce clear, executive-ready summaries that inform commercial and policy strategy. Your final deliverables may include a quantitative dashboard comparing state opportunities or a policy engagement strategy memo around specific priorities.

• Support real-time policy and stakeholder engagement efforts as they arise. Join conversations with state and national policymakers and regulators

This is not a passive research role. You will build durable strategic tools that influence real decisions.

What You Will Bring

We have a short list of must-have requirements. We prioritize a strong grip on first principles, hands-on skills, and a sense of initiative. Domain-specific knowledge and experience will help determine the career level for each hire.

Must-Have Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a graduate program (MBA, MPP/MPA, JD, MS, or related field). Exceptional undergraduate candidates may be considered.

• Demonstrated experience in energy policy, regulatory affairs, economics, industrial policy, or related fields

• Familiarity with inverter-based resources, grid modernization, or energy market design

• Strong analytical and synthesis skills — ability to distill complex regulatory or legal material into clear strategic insights

• Excellent written communication skills; able to produce concise executive-ready briefs

• Comfort operating in ambiguity and building structured outputs from unstructured information

• Self-starter with a bias for action in fast-paced environments

Nice-to-Haves

• Prior experience at an early-stage startup (policy, strategy, operations, or BD)

• Exposure to utility regulation or Public Utility Commission proceedings

• Experience analyzing legislation, rulemakings, or incentive programs

• Comfort building comparison frameworks or quantitative scoring models

• Interest in domestic manufacturing, economic development, or industrial strategy
